The district administration office in Garmisch-Partenkirchen stands as a space-forming unit consisting of several individual buildings in a garden-like environment that is interspersed with mostly two to three-storey individual buildings. The extension complements the existing buildings to form a new, functional unit and at the same time clarifies the existing individual urban situations. The extension, which is a large unit in terms of urban scale, is integrated into its surroundings by shifting the western and eastern parts of the building and orienting them towards the street at the ridge.
The two building sections on Olympiastrasse and Achenfeldstrasse form differently shaped urban spaces. The garden-like area on Achenfeldstrasse, characterised by existing trees, is complemented by the new part of the building and blends into the street space.
The building shows typical elements of local architecture in its design. On the one hand, the elements create a tangible scale, and on the other hand, they give the building the generosity of a modern administrative building. The three-storey building is divided into a light base area above which the upper storeys are protected by a wooden balcony screen.
This balcony zone also serves as a second escape route and shades the building.
The building is developed as a three-bay type, with the consecutive staircase as the main open access to the new building and various ancillary rooms in the central zone.
