LOCATION
The site of the emerging Dichterviertel is located very close to the historic centre of the city of Ulm, but separated by the main railway line. The basic spatial conditions of the new urban space were defined as part of the competition for the State Garden Show 2030. The new neighbourhood is an important building block for connecting the existing city on the Kleine Blau with the areas of the State Garden Show to the north. Today, these areas still present themselves as a landscape of major roads completely dedicated to motorised traffic. Only a glance at the plan for the future development makes it possible to imagine building development, especially residential development.
The urban scales of the neighbourhood, especially the desired density, are correspondingly confident.
CONCEPT
The design is intended as a mediating building block between the new neighbourhood to the south, the State Garden Show to the north and as part of the city skyline towards the railway.
The existing Wilhelminian style building is incorporated into the overall structure of the new urban block as a valuable, historical anchor. It creates a reference for the structure, minerality of the materials and colourfulness. The existing buildings can also be used to create a natural sequence of houses of different heights to form an urban block. The heights of the building blocks set precise situations in the urban space in accordance with their urban significance. Related five-storey houses with a staggered storey are lined up along Mörikestrasse. They are framed by a common plinth, just like the other buildings to the west and north-east towards the railway. The houses, which are oriented in the block towards the areas of the Landesgartensachau, refrain from differentiating the colours of the houses and thus create a strong spatial edge to the green spaces.
